Changes in Your Baby’s Body
Most health care providers count forward 40 weeks from the first day of your last period in order to calculate your due date. This is called gestational age. Using this system, you’re not actually pregnant in the first two weeks of your pregnancy.
Here are your baby’s stages of developmenti:
1 & 2 weeks
During the first two weeks of your pregnancy, your menstrual period is ending, and your body is getting ready for a new pregnancy.
At conception, when the egg and sperm unite, a new life has begun. Both the mother and the father contribute 23 chromosomes therefore producing 46 chromosomes which will determine eye color, hair color, gender, height and so on.
The baby’s heart begins to beat.
All the major organs and body systems are now in place. The fetus’s basic facial features are forming. You may start to feel morning sickness.
Your baby’s eyelids are beginning to form; the baby’s fingers and toes are forming. The baby may begin to move this week, although you will not be able to feel it.
Fingernails and toenails start to appear on your baby’s hands and feet. Toward the end of the 12th week, hair starts to appear. The baby can make a fist with his or her fingers.
At this stage, the male or female genitals are forming. Your baby can get the hiccups and suck his or her thumb. He or she can also frown, smile, and squint.
Your baby has his or her own fingerprints and toe prints. Hearing has developed to the point where loud noises outside the womb (dog barking, doorbell ringing) may startle the baby. Ultrasounds at this have revealed many babies smiling, laughing and pouting.
